Overview
Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), a fiscally sponsored project of the Tides Center, is a social justice organization serving poor and working class Arabs and Muslims across the San Francisco Bay Area, while organizing to overturn racism, forced migration, and militarism. Recognizing the diversity of experiences within our community, AROC utilizes a multi-pronged strategy. This includes case management, immigration legal services, youth and adult leadership development, organizing campaigns, and coalitional movement building.
Arab Youth Organizing (AYO) is the youth arm of AROC, engaging Bay Area public school youth ages 14-22 in leadership development, organizing skills training, and political education.
Who We Are
Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) organizes to fight for racial and economic justice and the dignity and liberation of our Arab, and Muslim communities. AROC works towards the self-determination of our people under attack in Palestine, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and across the entire SWANA region with the same breath that we fight for our freedoms here in the United States.
AYO was established as AROC’s youth arm by the first youth participants of the organization in 2009 in order to create a space for young Arabs in the Bay Area to build and organize their own communities. AYO brings together a diverse group of members from various SWANA countries, across genders, and representing San Francisco, Oakland, and other Bay Area cities. There are currently 25-30 active members regularly attending meetings, with more general members who participate in events.
The Opportunity
This position is ideal for a new organizer seeking to be supported and grow in an organizing staff role! The AYO Organizer will recruit and engage AYO participants in a dynamic political and cultural youth program, including weekly meetings, events and activities, and an annual summer institute. Programming supported by this position will include skills building, political development, and organizing campaign leadership. The Organizer will work in partnership and under the supervision of the Coordinator with programmatic supervision by AROC’s Organizing Director. This is a part time position, with possibility of increasing to full time in Summer 2025. Position requires some weekend and evening work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Organizing Duties (60%)
- Co-facilitate AYO meetings on a weekly basis, with support of AYO coordinator, including political education and youth focused leadership development activities.
- Support outreach and consistently conduct 1:1 with AYO members.
- Recruit youth at schools and other locations on a consistent and regular basis.
- Communicate regularly with youth and sometimes their guardians, ensuring consistent participation.
- Co-organize monthly youth focused events and/or mobilize youth to AROC actions, events, or meetings.
- Support with facilitation and logistics for annual Summer Youth Institute.
- Coordinate, organize, recruit, and annual Summer Youth Institute.
- Supervise and train youth interns (TAYO)
Operations and Program Admin (20%)
- Processing outreach information for internal recording keeping as well as in formats appropriate to stakeholders and funders.
- Filling out outreach reports.
- Ensuring that all outreach information is organized and accessible to all staff.
- Participate in trainings and leadership development opportunities.
- Participate in staff meetings, organization wide retreats to develop and evaluate annual goals and benchmarks.
- Responsible for other tasks as assigned by your supervisor.
Organizing Strategy and Implementation (10%)
- Develop and bring together grassroots youth members and leaders to shape and direct the goals and outcomes of organizing work.
- Help lead actions and events to support rapid response organizing efforts and actions as relevant to AYO.
- Support implementation of organizing goals, strategies, and campaigns including: turn out and support youth members, parents, and leaders, document & reflect on program activities.
- Work with the Coordinator and AROC Organizing Director to evaluate campaigns and programs, conduct research and power assessments, and develop strategy.
Strategic Partnerships (10%)
- Coordinate with the Adult Organizer to mobilize AYO members to ensure youth voice and participation in an intergenerational AROC campaigns, actions, and events.
- Support with mobilizing and coordinating AYO members to turnout in movement actions and advocacy events aligned with AROC strategic plans and goals.
- Develop relationships with school administrators, teachers, and community organizations in support of recruitment, outreach, and general programming..
Preferred Knowlede, Skills, & Experience
- At least 1 year experience with youth organizing work, or 2+ years as a youth participant
- Bachelor's degree (not required)
- Experience working in community development or non-profit environment
- Fluent in Arabic & English, writing skills preferred
- Strong people skills in person, by phone and email.
- Self-motivated, communicates well with co-workers, able to work in small teams
- Commitment to working with multi-racial coalitions. Commitment to racial and economic justice and immigrant rights.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

This position may require sitting at a desk for an extended period of time. It will also require being on site or to engage in local travel for organizational events, actions, and activities. There may be a hybrid work schedule between work from home and work out of the office. Some weekend and evening work will be required. The candidate should be able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds. The current AYO office is located up 2 flights of stairs.

Employment Terms
This position is 40 hours per week. This position has an hourly rate of $65-75K annually. This position is non-exempt. We offer a competitive health benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, a generous paid time off schedule, and other perks.
